Each year, the Center / Architecture + Design hosts its’ signature event, the DesignPhiladelphia Festival. Over the course of ten days, thousands of local designers, architects, and creative professionals participate in panel discussions, fashion shows, participatory workshops, studio tours, and design exhibitions. Most importantly, they have a chance to own the spotlight and showcase their work. It is a celebration of the thoughtful design, collaborative business practices and community engagement that make Philadelphia a respected creative hub.
This year, J2 had the incredible opportunity to participate in the festival, being tasked with creating an installation for the DesignPhiladelphia Festival Kickoff Party. Ecstatic about our invitation to contribute and showcase our work, our Art Director, Lucy Price led the charge and inspired our studio as we came together to collectively create these wonderful works of art!
Inspired by common phrases about good and bad luck, our studio let their imaginations run wild. We spent an afternoon with the help of our sister studio, Exit Design, workshopping our way to beautiful canvases for the installation and custom-designed notebooks to give away during the Kickoff Party. Our canvases were displayed behind the bar at the event, where guests had the chance to look closely at our work while ordering a drink! The final product is a hybrid of collage, paint, foam core, canvas, and wheatpaste. It was a wonderful way to begin a festival celebrating design across Philadelphia!
The Kickoff Party was so much fun! We’d like to offer a special thank you to the Center / Architecture + Design for hosting us and for using the DesignPhiladelphia Festival to bring minds, ideas, and beautiful design together. We’d also like to thank A.C. Moore for their sponsorship of the event and for providing us with all the supplies we needed! We can’t wait until next year!
